Here’s what you’ll need:

1. Wetsuit

  • Thickness: 7mm. A two-piece wetsuit (jacket and high-waisted pants) with an attached hood is recommended for better insulation.
  • Material: Open-cell neoprene is preferred for its warmth and flexibility.

  • Hood: An integrated hood is essential to minimize heat loss from your head.

2. Mask and Snorkel

  • Mask: Low-volume mask to reduce the amount of air needed to equalize.

  • Snorkel: Simple J-shaped snorkel without purge valves, as they are more reliable and less likely to break or fail.

3. Fins

  • Type: For beginners, short Snorkeling fins with an enclosed foot pocket work best until you build strength and technique. More advanced freedivers benefit from longer freediving fins these can be made from plastic, fiberglass, or carbon fiber.

  • Foot Pockets: Preferably make sure they fit snugly

4. Weight System

  • Weight Belt: Rubber belt with quick-release buckle for easy adjustment and safety.

  • Weights: Adjust according to your buoyancy, wetsuit thickness, and depth. For PNW conditions, you’ll likely need 12lb-20lbs of weight.

5. Gloves

  • Thickness: 5mm gloves, depending on water temperature. Provides warmth and protection against sharp rocks or marine life.

6. Socks or Booties

  • Thickness: 5mm, depending on your fins and tolerance to cold.

  • Purpose: Additional insulation and to prevent blisters from your fins.
